Metro International S.A. ("Metro International"), the world's largest international newspaper, announces that its two newspaper titles in Denmark, MetroXpress and 24 Timer, will in 2009 qualify for state press subsidy issued by the Danish Government. This is the first time that Metro has received such financial assistance from the Government. During 2009, the financial support is estimated to be approximately € 4.6 million for both titles.
The subsidy will be primarily used to re-establish the subscription network cancelled in 2006, when the special subsidy given to Post Danmark for distribution of newspapers was withdrawn by the Danish Government. The subsidy will enable Metroxpress A/S to expand its distribution network. MetroXpress will remain the most read newspaper in Denmark and together with 24 Timer, Metroxpress A/S will have more than one million daily readers.
Metroxpress A/S has formed a wholly owned subsidiary (Distributionskompagniet ApS) to manage its distribution function. Distributionskompagniet ApS will also provide distribution services to third parties.
